Description

Unarguably one of the most ubiquitous and influential singers in rock and roll, Darlene Love has been singing since the 1950s and shows no signs of stopping.

Event Details

Featured in the Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, Love had a hand in some of the biggest hits of the 1960s, from Bobby Pickett's “Monster Mash” to The Ronnettes’ “Be My Baby.” On January 18, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee will perform some of her most celebrated songs from the past 60 years LIVE on Tampa Theatre’s historic stage, including "Christmas Baby (Please Come Home)" and "He's a Rebel," to name a few.

As a minister’s daughter, Love got started singing in her church choir where she quickly caught the attention of her choir director, who pushed her to pursue music and make her remarkable voice her career. While still in high school, she joined a girl-group called the Blossoms, and in 1962, she was signed by the famous music producer Phil Spencer. She impressed her fellow musicians and worked with major artists including Sam Cooke, Sonny and Cher, and Elvis Presley. Love can be heard in some of the most memorable music from the era, including "The Tracks of My Tears," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah," and the Rolling Stone's “Gimme Shelter.”

Recently, Love has begun to reach a whole new, younger audience after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011 and her featured role in 20 Feet from Stardom, which highlighted the careers of back-up singers of the '50s, '60s, and '70s whose work is often underappreciated. Most recently, she released a new album called Introducing Darlene Love, and a film based on her 1998 autobiography is currently in development by Oprah Winfrey; Toni Braxton is expected to star as Darlene. Tampa Theatre is proud to present her incredible talent as a powerful and emotionally moving singer who has played a major role in music for more than 50 years.

Tickets are $48.50 / $58.50 / $63.50 / $68.50 (total, including fees) at the historic Franklin Street Box Office, or $52.50 / $63.00 / $68.25 / $73.50 (including fees) online.
