Spangles and Sawdust: The Lives of Circus Women
As a microcosm of broader society, the traveling circus has been a fascinating window on the ways in which cultural norms have been supported and subverted in various moments of history. From the beginning of the modern circus in 1768, women have been significant figures as performers, owners, and icons. Come hear about some of the extraordinary women under the big top and about how their stories are constantly emerging from the posters, photographs, prints, and ephemera that is included in the Circus Archives at The Ringling Museum.
Admission to the event is free, but registration is required. Tickets reserved together will be seated together. A two item minimum per person is required.
As Tibbals Curator of Circus at The Ringling, Jennifer Lemmer Posey interprets the museum’s circus collections to share stories of circus history and to illuminate the ever-evolving relationship between the circus arts and American culture. After receiving her BA in Art History from New College of Florida and an MA from Florida State University, Jennifer took a position with The Ringling and learned circus history first hand from the wonderful collections and the extraordinary circus community of Sarasota. Along with writings on circus history, Jennifer has been an advisory scholar for the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and a contributor to the American Experience program The Circus.
