Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer and gives people the opportunity to get outside and enjoy fun activities with family. It's also is an important day to recognize the sacrifices made by those who have served in the U.S. military.
Sarasota offers plenty of opportunities to pay respect to the holiday while also enjoying a relaxing day away from the office. Here are some of the top activities going on in Sarasota on Memorial Day:
Paying respect to the brave people who have served our country is a great way to spend Memorial Day. The Manatee County Veterans' Council is hosting their 2018 Memorial Day ceremony at Veterans' Monument Park beginning at 9 a.m.
Brigadier General Richard Blunt will serve as keynote speaker for the ceremony. There will also be several Veterans organizations on hand to lay wreaths for people who lost their lives serving our country.
The Sarasota Memorial Day Parade begins at 10 a.m. from the cross-section of Osprey and Main. This year's theme is "All Gave Some, Some Gave All," and there will be performances from the Sarasota Military Academy and Omaha, Nebraska's Blair High School.
Several local organizations and veterans groups will also march in the parade, and organizers are also hoping for an Air Force flyover at the start of the parade.
Later in the day, a Memorial Day Concert will take place in Phillippi Estate Park from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The Sarasota Concert Band will perform, and the park should be a great setting for a leisurely late afternoon activity with the family.
People are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs and coolers out to picnic in the park while listening to the band. Tickets are $5 for adults, and children 12 and under get in for free.
The beach is a popular destination on Memorial Day, and Siesta Key Beach has a regularly-scheduled activity that'll fit perfectly into your holiday plans. Every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, free yoga classes are offered from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.!
The classes are held between the green and red lifeguard stand. Donations are welcome, and attendees are asked to bring a towel or mat and drinking water.
