Event Details

About The Lecture:
Late imperial China (ca. seventeenth century–early twentieth century) witnessed an explosion of women writers and the flourishing of religious culture, such as Daoist culture. This talk will focus on how women writers created various images of the female immortal to enhance their literary productivity and to meet their emotional needs. These women’s writings highlight their talent as writers and demonstrate the worth of their very existence.

About The Speaker:
Dr. Yanning Wang received her Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. Her research interests include pre-modern Chinese literature and culture, late imperial (Ming-Qing) women’s writing, and Chinese literature and religion. In addition to her scholarly articles, she is the author of the book Reverie and Reality: Poetry on Travel by Late Imperial Chinese Women (2014).
