Ring in the New Year and celebrate a special piece of Sarasota history with a visit to Sarasota Jungle Gardens as they celebrate their 80th anniversary!
Event Details
One of Florida’s oldest continuous attractions, Sarasota Jungle Gardens, is celebrating its 80th anniversary on December 31. Visitors who purchase one full-priced admission will receive half off another admission on that day.
Jungle Gardens officially opened to the public on New Year’s Eve, 1939 after several years of development by a local newspaper man who wanted to turn the “impenetrable swamp” into a beautiful botanical garden. Soon, the paradise began to attract numerous people daily who would want to wander through the manicured jungle. Today’s wandering pathways generally follow the same trails that were laid out in shell in the 1930s. Notable visitors include Albert Einstein and frequent visitor Eleanor Roosevelt.
Last year, the Garden’s famous 82-year-old iconic performing Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Frosty Sr., retired from his daily star performing role after more than 40 years. Frosty Sr. had been a fixture at the Gardens, delighting visitors with his high-wire unicycle act and scooter riding skills and still resides in the Gardens. Frosty came to Sarasota Jungle Gardens in the mid-70’s. He was originally trained by prisoners at the Folsom State Prison in California as part of an inmate rehabilitation program. Frosty has appeared on the Ed Sullivan TV show in the 1960s where he performed his high-wire unicycle act.
