George Gershwin’s jazzy overture opens this lively program. Clark Rundell, a highly sought-after American conductor based in England, will guest conduct. Violinist Viviane Hagner, praised for her masterful displays of technique and artistry, promises to dazzle in two showpieces: Saint-Saëns’s virtuosic masterpiece and the demanding and imaginative Concerto No. 5 by Vieuxtemps. Barber’s dreamlike Night Flight recalls the composer’s own experiences in the US Air Force while Bernstein's film score On the Waterfront offers a gritty depiction of New York City.
